The Chandra Law Firm LLC is a boutique civil-rights and white-collar-criminal litigation firm with highly credentialed, experienced attorneys who provide passionate, creative, and relentless advocacy for their clients in Ohio and across America—especially in crises and when reputations are at stake.
Chandra Law has been peer rated in U.S. News & World Reports as one of the Best Law Firms in America for Civil Rights, in Ohio Super Lawyers®, and in Best Lawyers in America®.
At Chandra Law, we view ourselves as "karmic facilitators"™—bending, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, the moral arc of the universe toward justice, holding wrongdoers accountable for their bad behavior, and protecting our clients from attack.
We have achieved tremendous results for clients when everything—liberty, property, or reputation—was on the line.
As a former federal prosecutor, law director for a major American city, and large-firm litigator in both Los Angeles and Cleveland, founding and managing partner Subodh Chandra draws on experiences that few lawyers have had in combination. And Chandra's distinguished colleagues—who include veterans of large-firm practice and former federal law clerks—drive the firm's dynamic strategies to get results.
Practice areas include:
- civil-rights (like employment discrimination and retaliation; First Amendment, voting rights, police and other governmental misconduct), defamation (slander and libel), civil liabilty for criminal acts, and malicious prosecution),
- whistleblower actions including the federal False Claims Act, and
- white-collar criminal defense (like healthcare fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, mortgage fraud, telecommunications fraud, and public corruption).
The firm also performs internal investigations (including for Fortune 200 companies).
Often, the dilemmas confronting Chandra Law's clients are high profile and have a crisis-communications and public-policy dimension requiring attorneys who understand how to navigate a challenging media environment, protect reputations under public scrutiny, and challenge reputations that richly deserve to be challenged.
Our cases are nationally known:
- We co-represented the family of 12-year-old Tamir Rice—slain by Cleveland police in 2014—helping the family obtain a $6 million settlement and the firing of the officer who shot the boy.
- We represented a whistleblower who faced retaliation after reporting sexual harassment by a now-former law-school dean. This, too, resulted a satisfactory result for our client.
- We helped obtain a defamation judgment of over $4.1 million on behalf of comedian and commentator Dean Obeidallah against Andrew Anglin, the publisher of the white-supremacist website The Daily Stormer.
- We recovered $1,000,000 in settlements against the City of Cleveland for First Amendment retaliation and malicious prosecutions against protestors of the 2016 Republican National Convention, and obtained at least two other nearly $1,000,000 settlements in First Amendment–retaliation cases.
- We obtained an $830,000+ judgment against the professional boxer Adrien Broner, over sexual assault.
- We filed criminal charges against Donald Trump and J.D. Vance over their misconduct toward Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio.
- We've represented many victims of torture and brutality by corrections officers in jail, including those who faced retaliation for blowing the whistle on the misconduct. (See linked video for an example.)
- And we've served as lead counsel on some of the most important voting-rights litigation in Ohio, fighting and winning against voter-suppression schemes against minority, poor, and naturalized-citizen voters.
At Chandra Law, your case is our cause.®
